It's Chrissy's birthday and, as with Christmas, Eddie is painfully aware he's not really sure how to do all these important things.
Christmas had gone well. It had gone really well, actually, considering where they're at now, so he's also doing his best not to overthink any of it and just go with the flow. If Chrissy hated that, she probably wouldn't want to be with him at all, so he visits her on the actual day, then promises her they're going to do something fun on Friday night.
They're doing an escape room.
Eddie had only heard about them about a week ago and, given his love of games, he'd immediately started researching and found a place in Darrow where there were some rooms meant just for two people. Date night game rooms, as they were advertised on the website, and Eddie had excitedly booked one.
First, though, he's going to her place with a big bouquet of flowers he'd helped put together himself. Soft blooms, white and pink and blue, hydrangeas and lilies and tulips, and Eddie is honestly pretty proud of himself as he knocks on Chrissy's door.

This is hardly the first time they've gone out, but she still feels just a little nervous as she gets ready. The weather is surprisingly warm, at least, enough that she settles on wearing a dress she bought during the summer, one that seems in a good middle ground between casual and nice. Her hair, she wears half-up, half-down, and she's just finished lightly dusting blush over her cheeks when she hears a knock at the door.
"Just a second!" she calls, hoping her voice carries enough that he'll hear her. Quickly, and somewhat haphazardly, she shoves everything back into her makeup bag, which she leaves on the bathroom counter, then goes to open the door. She grins up at Eddie immediately; then, noticing the flowers he carries, she draws in a breath, standing aside to let him in. "Hey," she says. "Those are beautiful. For me?"
no subject
His grin grows, because he honestly feels pretty proud of the bouquet.
"So... happy birthday," he says, leaning down to kiss her in a proper greeting. So far, he's tried to go the gentlemanly route, he doesn't want to push her into anything too quickly, but he loves kissing her. He's going to do it as often as she'll let him.
no subject
"They look very far from not crappy," she assures him as she goes about filling the vase with water, letting go of his hand so she can grab a pair of scissors and snip the very bottoms of the stems off. "In a good way, I mean, they're beautiful. You'll have to show me that shop sometime."
no subject
But it doesn't scare him so much anymore. Not since meeting Lestat, who is somehow scarier and still intriguing.
He doesn't want to think about that, though. His wandering had found him the flower shop and it had found him the escape room and that's all he cares about tonight.
"You got it," he promises, leaning his elbows on the counter to watch her put her flowers away. "Want to know where we're going?"
no subject
She doesn't always like surprises, but it's different with Eddie. She knows him, and while it may not give her a specific idea of what to expect, she does know that whatever it is, they'll have fun. She always does when she's with him, more so than she's used to with anyone else. "I wanna know."
no subject
Not that he expects Chrissy to know what that is. He hadn't, not until he'd started looking for something for them to do. It wasn't a thing in the eighties, but he's excited to share it with her now, something they can both do for the first time together.
"It's sort of like a game or... a bunch of puzzles. We go into this room and it has a theme, the one I picked is London 1888, and we're meant to solve the puzzles and catch a serial killer."
no subject
"An escape room? I've never heard of that before."
no subject
She makes him want to be better and try harder and he's willing to bet she has no idea she does that for him.
"Most of them are meant for bigger groups," he says. "Four to eight people, party stuff. But this place I found also does rooms that are meant for date nights, so it's good for two to four people. Double date nights, I guess, we can make Harrington and his girl go with us at some point."
no subject
"But tonight, it's just us." Satisfied with the flowers, she steps back toward Eddie and leans up to give him another quick kiss. There's a lot that she could say, how no one has ever done for her the kind of things that he has and how much that means, but it feels far too serious. She suspects it would ruin the mood, and she really doesn't want that. "I'm ready if you are."
no subject
It's still nuts to him that he's allowed to do this. That she wants him to.
"Okay, let's do this," he says, holding his hand out to her. "I ordered us a car, because I'm still a little way from getting another van. Also, being able to just order a car on my phone? Maybe the best thing I discovered this week."
The first week, it had been the ability to have all his music right there at the tips of his fingers. The second, a matching game with fruit and gems, and now, ordering a car. By the time they get downstairs, it's right there, waiting for them, and Eddie opens the door for Chrissy to get in ahead of him.
no subject
She smooths her skirt down with all the grace and practice of someone who's used to wearing short skirts and trying not to be immodest about it, angling slightly toward him. it's only a few moments later that the car pulls away from the curb. "You know," she says then, once they're moving, "I'm kind of excited about this... escape room?"
no subject
He just doesn't want to seem pushy. And he doesn't want Chrissy to think for even a second that he only wants to sleep with her. He does. Kind of a lot. But he wants so much more with her than just that.
"It'll be fun," Eddie agrees, lifting his gaze from her thighs. His cheeks have reddened slightly, knowing she's probably caught him, but maybe he doesn't mind. "Even if we have no idea what the hell we're doing."
no subject
She wouldn't do so in the back of a stranger's car anyway, too aware that anything they say can be heard. Really, there's no sense in even thinking too much about it while they're en route to do something she really is looking forward to.
"Not a clue," she agrees, shaking her head. "But who cares, right?"
no subject
"Even if we're completely terrible, we'll have a great time," he promises as the car pulls up outside the escape room place. He's not sure what else to call it, the location they've arrived at, this low, squat building at the end of a strip mall. From the outside, it looks like just another store, but once they've climbed out and Eddie opens the front door, it's like going into another world.
Each room is advertised overheard different doors and he looks from one to the other, then points at theirs, down a long hall. "That's us," he says as he heads to the front desk to check them in.
no subject
That the car comes to a stop when it does is definitely for the best, and she smiles as she follows Eddie inside, taking in the sight of all of it. "Oh, this is so cool," she says quietly, half to herself, half to him. "How does anyone even think up something like this?"
no subject
She's tapping away at her computer now, pulling up their reservation.
"That's us," Eddie agrees as he settles his arm across Chrissy's shoulders, as utterly floored as ever that he's allowed to. "It's Chrissy's birthday, so we're doing the date night room thing."
"Well," the girl grins at Chrissy. "Happy birthday! The room isn't the most romantic thing in the world, but there are some jump scare moments. Definitely a good opportunity to protect this guy when he jumps into your arms."
no subject
Although they've been together for a while now, almost three months, it still feels a little surreal that he wants this, that he'd go out of his way to put together something like this for her. Eddie being kind and thoughtful, that part doesn't surprise her at all anymore. Being on the receiving end of it like this, though, does.
Pressing up to her toes for a moment, she turns her head to plant a quick kiss on Eddie's cheek. "Well, I think I'm ready if you are."
no subject
"Okay, so, the door isn't actually locked," the girl says as she leads them down the hall toward their room. "Because that would be a fire hazard. If you need to leave at any time, you can, but just be aware that's an automatic fail on the room."
She grins, then opens their door. "The timer will be up there." She points to a small screen near the top of their room. "We'll be watching the whole time, so if we find a clue is taking you too long and you're struggling, we might give you a hint. That'll come under the door in the form of a letter. Once you're done with any props, leave them against the wall, we'll collect them and put them away later."
She claps her hands and says, "I think that's it. Do you have any questions?"
Eddie shakes his head and looks to Chrissy. "Do you?"
no subject
For the time being, they have this to focus on anyway. Being sentimental can wait. She shifts her weight from her toes to her heels and back, excited and a little nervous. "I guess it's time to give this a try."
no subject
For a moment, the room remains lit up, then the lights suddenly go out, plunging them into darkness, and Eddie laughs and grabs for Chrissy's hand. A booming voice comes over some kind of sound system, a little silly, a lot theatrical, and Eddie is immediately entirely into this.
"Dear Boss, I keep on hearing the police have caught me, but they wont fix me just yet. I have laughed when they look so clever and talk about being on the right track," the voice announces. "But are you?"
"I'm pretty sure that's straight out of a Jack the Ripper letter," Eddie whispers to Chrissy as the lights come up halfway, leaving them in the room slightly marred by shadows. Still holding her hand, Eddie goes to the first thing he sees, a series of numbers and weird shapes on one wall.
no subject
"Is it really?" she asks, eyes bright with curiosity. Her own voice stays quiet, too, though she isn't sure why. There's no one else actually in here. It's just all very atmospheric, easy to get swept up in. "Okay, so I guess... all of these have to mean something, right?"
no subject
A lot of teachers have written Eddie off over the years, but his eyes light up almost immediately.
"It's a code," he says, then points at a small, locked box across the room. It's not immediately obvious, but under the combination lock is a series of symbols. "They match, see? Okay, you go over to the box and tell me what the symbols look like and I'll tell you what number to put into the lock."
no subject
It doesn't really surprise her at all that Eddie seems to have caught onto this so quickly. Somehow it just makes sense that he'd be in his element solving puzzles like this. It's sort of hot, actually, but that's a thought she puts away for later.
no subject
He has no idea what's going to be inside the box, but he heads over to where Chrissy is, wanting to see once she has it open.
This is something he would have killed to have back in Hawkins. It's not really the same as DnD, but it's not completely unlike it either. There are puzzles and stories and maybe they're not pretending to be different people, but they're still in a story, and that's very cool.
no subject
She can certainly enjoy it from other people, though, shooting Eddie an anticipatory smile over her shoulder as she carefully opens the safe. Inside is a square of paper, which she removes, handling it delicately, holding it out so she and Eddie can both look at it. "So this has to be some kind of clue for what we do next."
no subject
For something he'd never even heard of before, it's a hell of a lot of fun. He and Chrissy spend a lot of time laughing and Eddie squeals in shock at one point, as he has to thrust his arm into a dark hole, and he's grabbed by someone on the other side. At one point, a fake bat swoops toward them, brushing Chrissy's hair, and not even that is enough to ruin Eddie's good mood.
"Okay, okay, this is it," he says, bouncing on the balls of his feet. "This has to be the last step. This is where the killer is hiding, we just need to find the key."
They're standing in front of a wall covered in keys. But one of them is different. It has to be.
no subject
On this, though, she's stumped, at least for the moment. "How do we know which one?" she asks, quietly breathless with anticipation. With one hand, she reaches out, idly grazing her fingertips along the keys like that might reveal some clue. "There's got to be some way to tell, right?"
no subject
One of them glitters when she does. Eddie's not sure how they've done it, some clear paint with glitter in it that only catches the light at certain angles, but when Chrissy's fingers catch it, it sparkles, sending little sparks of light across the floor.
"That one," he says, pointing to it. "It has to be."
no subject
"Here," she says, her smile bright and eager. "You try it."
no subject
Inside, their imitation Jack the Ripper sits in handcuffs. The actor lifts his head and Eddie has to admit, the guy is pretty scary.
"Well Boss, it looks like you finally got a fix on me," he says. "But don't worry. I'll be out again soon enough."
The door slams closed again and Eddie coughs out a startled laugh as the lights in the room come up and the original door they'd come through springs open.
no subject
Somewhere in the back of her head, she's aware that this is probably the best birthday she's ever had. There's something sad about that, but something kind of great, too.
"That was so fun."
no subject
"That was so cool," he says as he sets Chrissy back down. Taking her hand, Eddie heads toward the door they'd originally come through, and the girl who had helped them at the start is waiting.
"Congratulations!" she says, handing Eddie a big sign that says We Did It! and one to Chrissy that just proclaims, WINNER! "Let me get a picture of you guys together."
no subject
"That was so cool," she agrees once they've handed the signs back. "I don't know how you found out about this, but honestly, I can't remember the last time I had this much fun on my birthday."
no subject
It's all he wants. To make her smile.
"I'm glad," he says. "It's your birthday, you should be having the best time."
But he knows what she means. His own birthdays have never been anything special. Wayne had always tried, but it wasn't like there was a lot of money to go around, so mostly they got Chinese and ate together in the trailer. A couple of times there had been a small cake, too.
"We should do one of the group rooms next time," he suggests. "Get Robin and Harrington and Byers to come with us."
no subject
Tonight, though, she wouldn't have wanted to spend with anyone but Eddie. She doesn't know how to explain that she's never had the best time on her birthday before — that the only good thing about it, really, was that it brought her closer and closer to being able to leave home — but she would rather just focus on how good this one is.
"And now we'll be, like, experts at it."
no subject
Eddie is actually really good at working as part of a team. He'd rather be the leader, the Dungeon Master, the guy in charge, but he can set that all aside and just go with the flow, work with the team, when that's the thing that matters most.
"Now it's ice cream time," he says, taking Chrissy's hand as they leave the Escape Room place. "I found this really cool shop, they put whatever you want in the ice cream, then put it on this really cold thing and... okay, it's hard to explain, but it's totally cool."
no subject
She's still smiling, her hand still around his as they head outside. "You really went all out with plans, didn't you?" she asks. "Flowers, this, ice cream..."
no subject
Wayne had always tried, but Eddie has never properly had it before. Not the way he thinks it's really meant to be.
"Going all out would be like, hosting a ball," he teases. "Having a catered dinner and a string quartet and dancing and all your friends in fancy dresses and suits."
no subject
This is all she wanted from tonight, anyway. The specifics may have been a surprise, but just the two of them, relaxing, doing something fun together, not needing to worry about anyone else — that's the most she could ask for.
"For the record, I'll take flowers and an escape room over a fancy ball any day, thank you."
no subject
They turn another corner and Eddie gestures with a flourish, saying, "I give you ice cream!"
The shop is cute, the exterior bricks painted pink, the trim white, and through the window, they can see the people inside making the ice cream rolls. It's cool to watch the way it spreads in a thin layer on the frozen plate and how they roll it up into a scroll.
"Come on," Eddie says, opening the door for Chrissy with a grin.
no subject
It's easy to get caught up in how good she feels, anyway, how much it means that he's picked things that fit so well with her taste. The aesthetic of this alone is perfectly her, and for a moment, the very fact of that distracts her from the sight in the window.
"Wait, that's the ice cream?" she asks as they step inside, nodding toward where the staff members are shaping it. "Those flat little rolls?"
no subject
Eddie feels like he's not explaining it right, so he just opens the door instead, gesturing for Chrissy to go inside ahead of him.
In the shop, the air smells sweet, but not overpowering, and Eddie finds his mouth watering a little. However they make it, it's pretty clear this is good quality stuff and he's excited to try it.
